Tidy Towns helping Kilkenny’s Pollinators

It’s been a long winter and a busy time of year for Tidy Towns groups who do brilliant work to enhance the built and natural heritage in Kilkenny’s towns and villages. There is a special award in the Tidy Towns competition which helps protect our pollinators. The award is jointly run by Local Authority Heritage Officers, Biodiversity Officers and the National Biodiversity Data Centre. It involves a little more paperwork, on top of your Tidy Towns application, but there are potential great rewards such as
• Total cash prize of €9,000
• Positive feedback from TT judges
• We have even noticed an increase in points for some entrants in the “Green Space & Landscaping” and “Nature & Biodiversity” categories of the TT competition.

In 2017, we were delighted to have 3 towns/villages from Co. Kilkenny enter– Kilkenny City, Inistioge and Kells, and we’re hoping that even more groups will enter this year.
We have produced a colourful newsletter, packed with hints and tips, and highlights of good examples from the 2017 entries. Click here to view.

Why not have a look at the newsletter and the Pollinator Application Form and you might find that it is something that your community could get involved with.  This form can also be downloaded from the Tidy Towns website http://www.tidytowns.ie/special-awards/

Closing date: Wednesday 23rd May 2018.  For further information contact Kilkenny Heritage Office at heritage@kilkennycoco.ie
