A helpful new document is now available that explains 24 things local communities can do to help pollinators. New Award to Help Save Our Bees

A new Pollinator Award, sponsored by the Heritage Offices & Biodiversity Offices of Local Authorities across Ireland, which encourages TidyTowns groups to implement pollinator friendly actions as part of the national TidyTowns competition, has just been launched.

Irish bees, crucial in the pollination of our plants, trees and vegetables, are in decline. The aim of the award is to reverse this trend by encouraging TidyTowns groups to take simple pollinator friendly measures in their local area.

Guidelines for Tidy Towns groups to help implement the Pollinator Plan will be available at the end of next week at http://www.biodiversityireland.ie/pollinator-plan. The guidelines will include practical actions as well as lists of the best plants for bees. The All Ireland Pollinator Plan 2015-2020 is produced and co-ordinated by the National Biodiversity Data Centre.

Junior Pollinator plan

This is a Junior version of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2015-2020. It is a collaboration between organisations including the National Biodiversity Centre, Trinity College Dublin and the Science Foundation Ireland. It is supported by Green Schools and Eco Schools.

Counting Ireland’s Nature: evidence of winners and losers in the fight to save our biodiversity

The first Irish National Biodiversity Indicators are launched in an attempt to assess the health of Ireland’s nature. Biodiversity indicators tell us the changes taking place in the natural world through the use of a wide range of data. They are designed to provide an overview of the trends in the health of species and their habitats on land and in the sea. The data also provides information on Irish society’s relationship with wildlife protection. See http://indicators.biodiversityireland.ie/
