The Field Over the Wood, The Rotten Field, Molly’s Acre, Pin Cushion?

Do you remember names like these being spoken around your kitchen table, out in the farmyard or at the church gate; the field names of your family farm, your townland or your parish? Some of these names are generations old and tell us as much about ourselves as about our families and communities.

“The Eleven Acres”, Carigeen Townland

The Kilkenny Fieldname Recording Project is an initiative of the Kilkenny Heritage Office working with communities around County Kilkenny to record and map the old fieldnames before they are lost. This project developed from the Townlands Project, a collaborative project, led by visual artist Alan Counihan, and co-funded by the Heritage and Arts Offices of Kilkenny County Council. The book ‘Townlands: a habitation, a celebration of an Irish rural landscape’ explores through both word and image, of our place in the world and the meaning of home.

The Rocks, Kilcross, Townland

Since 2010, the Kilkenny Fieldname Recording Project, funded by Kilkenny County Council and the Heritage Council and involving more than 80 local volunteers has collected and mapped over 7,000 field names across 194 townlands. These 7,000 names are a living record not just of the topography of the land but of the families who farm and have farmed it, of the monuments that occupy it, of plants and animals that inhabit it, of local history and folklore and of the Irish language as it was spoken in this corner of the country.

The publication “Meitheal na bPáirceanna: The Kilkenny Field Name Recording Project” , launched in 2016, provides an overview of the field names recorded, contributions from the project volunteers, and a glossary of the Irish (Gaelic) field names.
The publication, which was featured in “Ear to the Ground” Winter 2016 magazine, and the accompanying database, will be invaluable to local people, students, heritage groups/historical societies, historians, geneaologists, Irish place name specialists, Irish language specialists, academic researchers, and the diaspora.

If you would like a hard copy of the book contact Kilkenny County Council Heritage Office. Email: heritage@kilkennycoco.ie

The Heritage Office of Kilkenny County Council is launching a new publication which celebrates six years of work gathering the old Field Names of County Kilkenny, before they are lost forever. The launch, which is hosted by livestock auctioneer George Chandler, will be held on Wednesday 12th October 2016 at 7.30pm in the Newpark Hotel, Kilkenny.

Old field names are a tangible link to the past. Names such as Peg’s Well, The Faha, The Church Meadow and Ciarsúir tell us about long forgotten people, their lives, their work and the places they lived.

The publication marks a key milestone in the Kilkenny Field Name Recording Project. The project, which began in 2010, and is jointly funded by Kilkenny County Council and the Heritage Council, has collected over 7,000 field names across 190 townlands in County Kilkenny. Over 80 volunteers have contributed time, energy and thousands of voluntary work hours to the Project.

The title of the book, “Meitheal na bPáirceanna. The Kilkenny Field Name Recording Project”, signifies the co-operative nature of the project. According to Cllr. Matt Doran, Cathaoirleach, Kilkenny County Council “We are deeply indebted to those who engaged in the Project. Tremendous voluntary work has been undertaken by the community in the process.”

In addition to producing the book, all the fieldnames are being digitally mapped using Geographic Information Systems, so as to create a permanent and publicly accessible record of the results which will be displayed on the Kilkenny County Council website.

This is really a book about places and the people who inhabit them. It includes an analysis of the most commonly recorded field names, and field names recorded in Irish (up to 14% are recorded in Irish). There are heartfelt contributions from some of the volunteers and a list of all volunteers who contributed to the project. Eilís Costello from Lisdowney, a project volunteer, says “You couldn’t be involved in this without being moved and changed by it. With so many people still alive who have the local knowledge, we should make use of that gift now so that we get the information they have and pass it on to those who are coming after us. We’ll have done great justice to the land and the area if we just bear this in mind.”
The book also includes an essay exploring the field names and birthplace of John O’Donovan (one of the greatest scholars of Irish place names, and a Kilkenny man); and a comprehensive glossary of Irish (Gaelic) field names recorded.

“This publication provides a lasting legacy which will become a valuable reference source in the future. It demonstrates the importance of heritage to local communities and the benefits of developing partnerships between Kilkenny County Council and local communities”, says Colette Byrne Chief Executive, Kilkenny County Council.

The publication, and the accompanying database, will be invaluable to local people, students, heritage groups/historical societies, historians, geneaologists, Irish place name specialists, Irish language specialists, academic researchers, and the diaspora.

According to Dearbhala Ledwidge, Heritage Officer, “This project wouldn’t have been possible without the input of the volunteers, and also the dedication and energy of our Project Co-ordinator Alan Counihan. Working with such interested and dedicated people has been a joy and inspiration. I hope that this publication will encourage and inspire others to record their local heritage.”

Admission to the launch on Wednesday 12th October 2016 at 7.30pm in the Newpark Hotel, Kilkenny is free, and all are welcome. Refreshments will be provided. To help us plan for the refreshments we ask you to kindly rsvp to lisa.bourke@kilkennycoco.ie or 056-7794931.
