Community Heritage Grant Scheme 2021 now open
The Heritage Council Community Heritage Grant Scheme 2021 is now open for applications with an allocation of approx. €1m for nationwide projects. This programme is open to voluntary and community groups, heritage-related NGO’s and not-for-profit heritage organisations. Closing date for applications: 5pm Monday 29th March 2021. Friary Street Ambush 100 years commemoration
To commemorate the centenary of the Friary Street ambush, at the request of the Elected Members of the Municipal District of Kilkenny City, a small wreath laying ceremony took place on 21st Feb with Kilkenny Municipal Mayor, Cllr John Coonan, Kilkenny County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr. Andrew McGuinness and descendants of Thomas Dullard. Mr. Dullard, a civilian and young father, got caught in the crossfire of the Ambush as he was leaving the Friary Church after confessions. Captain Thomas Hennessy and Michael Dermody, 1st Battalion IRA, were also fatally wounded. A short film, recounting the story of this ambush, produced by Larry Scallan retired Army Commandant, military historian and former manager of Kilkenny Military Barracks Museum, and funded under Kilkenny County Council’s 2020 Decade of Centenaries Programme can be viewed on the Council’s YouTube channel https://youtu.be/5LmO6kvc7f0
New William Marshal book published
Four Courts Press have published a new book titled ‘William Marshal and Ireland’, by authors/editors, the late John Bradley, a Kilkenny native, Coilin Ó’Drisceoil, director of Kilkenny Archaeology and a member of Kilkenny Archaeological Society and Michael Potterton. This richly illustrated collection examines the important Irish career of one of the most famous personalities of medieval Europe, William Marshal and his wife Isabel de Clare. OHNI 10th birthday and new website launch
The Oral Heritage Network of Ireland will celebrate 10 years in existence and their new website launch on Tuesday 23rd March @7pm. This free online networking event, via Zoom, offers a space for oral historians to meet in an informal setting to discuss ideas and meet other people involved in oral history. The European Commission have designated 2021 as the European Year of Rail.
