Kilkenny Mass Paths

Kilkenny County Council and the Heritage Office at Kilkenny County Council are delighted to announce the launch of Phase 2 of Mass Paths in Memory – A Mass Paths Survey in County Kilkenny.

Mass paths are an important and under-recorded part of our cultural heritage. They serve as reminders of the challenges faced by Catholics during the penal times, and also reminders of a later era when they were used by people in rural areas as pedestrian routes to mass, to visit neighbours and for going to school. If they are not recorded in the near future, their presence and value will have faded from the public memory.

Funding has now been awarded for Phase 2 of this project by the Heritage Council and Kilkenny County Council. This will involve the identification and recording of ten further Mass Paths throughout the county. As a key element of this phase, training will be undertaken with interested groups to provide the skills necessary for recording Mass Paths and many other heritage assets at a local level. This phase will enable community and heritage groups to continue this work into phase 3 of the project – identifying, recording and ensuring the history of their local Mass Paths is captured for future generations.

Pat Reid will once again lead this project and he is looking for information on Mass Paths all over Co. Kilkenny. If you have information on Mass Paths in your locality, please contact Pat by email at info@wicklowwillow.ie or by phone on 087 9587503.  You can also contact the Heritage Office at Kilkenny County Council at heritage@kilkennycoco.ie or 056 779 4923.

Kilkenny’s Holy Wells

The Heritage Office at Kilkenny County Council, in conjunction with Shanarc Archaeology, are carrying out a second phase of survey work on the holy wells around Kilkenny county. This project is funded by the Heritage Council in partnership with Kilkenny County Council.

This summer, the survey team are seeking further assistance from people across the county in an effort to locate numerous holy wells that are less well-known, or that have become hidden or lost to most people. These wells were written about by antiquarians, surveyors or historians in the past, but the locations of the wells have not yet been found. Other holy wells may be missing from the records entirely. These holy wells occur across the whole of the county, from Castlecomer in the north to Mooncoin in the south, from Ballycallan in the west and Graignamanagh in the east.

The survey team is asking the people of Kilkenny to reach out with information they may have about possible holy wells in their area, where they are located and any stories, events, traditions or folklore connected with the wells. A list of townlands where there are references to a holy well but where there is no known location can be found on the Holy Wells of Kilkenny Facebook page; Kilkennyheritage.ie or below;

We look forward to hearing your holy well stories and finding the holy wells missing from the records.
