Would you like your children/pupils to learn more about their heritage, and Kilkenny’s archaeology, in a fun and education-centred way?

The Heritage Office of Kilkenny County Council, in partnership with the Kilkenny County Childcare Committee, Kilkenny Education Centre, Dig-it-Kids, and with co-funding from the Heritage Council, has developed a series of 4 lesson plans, and a teachers resource pack to help teach children about archaeology.

The lesson plans are aimed at pre-school, and also junior and senior infant classes in primary schools. They are linked to the primary school curriculum and the Aistear Curriculum.

The teachers resource pack is aimed at providing teachers and early school practitioners with the skills and resources to carry out an on-line study of an area such as their school or home and is designed to be used in parallel with the archaeology lesson plans.

The 4 lesson plans are:
1. The Home: Now and Then
2. Sand Pit Archaeology
3. Clothes: Now and Then
4. Shield Making

A special thanks to the teachers and early school practitioners who took part in the pilot lesson plan workshops – their enthusiastic involvement and feedback was invaluable.
