Kilkenny County Council Decade of Centenaries Programme 2021

The Kilkenny County Council Community Strand of the Decade of Centenaries Programme 2021 is designed to raise awareness and encourage engagement with the significant events and people from County Kilkenny associated with 1921.

The Council invited applications from the community for a public grant scheme and to date has awarded funding to eight projects in the first round of grant offers.

A series of 8 online lectures, on topics including: Joseph MacDonagh, T.D, Ernie O’Malley, the Coolbawn Ambush, the last months of British rule in Kilkenny, Cumann na mBan, and the Kilkenny Gaol break. County-wide South Kilkenny Historical Society €1,200
Digitising and indexing a collection of letters written in 1921 by people in Ireland to the American Committee for Relief in Ireland requesting funding to rebuild businesses from losses as a result of the activities of the Crown Forces. National Interest Kilkenny Archaeological Society €2,220

In addition, the Heritage Office, and the Library Service, will deliver a county-wide programme of projects which commemorate the events and people from 1921 in Co. Kilkenny. This will include a radio series with KCLR called “The History Fix”; a series of 14 history podcasts on events in Kilkenny in 1921; a local history film; and a brochure about the Kilkenny Gaol break-out.

Kilkenny County Council received funding for the Decade of Centenaries Programme from the National Commemorations Unit of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. All events/projects are to be delivered in line with Govt/HSE COVID 19 guidance.
