Congratulations to all on a successful Heritage Week 2023

National Heritage Week, which took place from 12-20 August, has wrapped up for another year. The week saw a colourful range of events and projects celebrating all aspects of our heritage take place across the county as communities, families, holiday makers and people of all ages and backgrounds were encouraged to get out and explore their heritage. Close to 60 events took place to great success across Kilkenny City and County. Click here for a full review of the week.

 

National Heritage Week Awards

The Heritage Council’s National Heritage Awards celebrate the most engaging projects and events organised by National Heritage Week project organisers. The National Heritage Week awards is now open for nominations. Events and digital projects can be nominated for consideration for an award. Closing date for submissions is Thursday 31st August 2023.

National Hedgerow Week (1st to 8th 2023)

To celebrate National Hedgerow Week (1st-8th Sept), there are a number of events taking place in Kilkenny.

Join Nore Vision and Eoin Donnelly on Tuesday 5th September, 7:00 – 8:30pm at Jenkinstown for ‘Hedgerows; Laying and Wildlife’ walk and talk event.  Learn about the history and methods of hedge laying, stock proofing, wildlife and more. Nore Vision second event ‘Hedgerows of Kilkenny City’ is taking place on Wednesday 6th September, 1:00-2:30pm. To mark National Hedgerow, Nore Vision and the Heritage Council are hosting a lunchtime walk and talk to celebrate the hedgerows of Kilkenny City.  Learn about the history of hedges in Ireland and the plants, trees, birds and mammals that inhabit them. Come along to ‘Hedgerow Foraging Walk and Talk’ with Monica Fleming in Dunmore. Monica will introduce you to autumn fruits of the hedgerows. The event is taking place on September 7th, 2023 starting at 6:45p starting at Dunmore Church Car Park. There are limited places available, to reserve your place send an email to biodiversity@kilkennycoco.ie .

Digital recordings of Shee Alms House

As part of the conservation works at Shee Alms House, Rose Inn Street, a laser scan and photogrammetric survey were undertaken on the building. The Shee Alms House is one of the oldest alms houses in Ireland, dating to the 1580s, and is recognised as a building on national importance.  The former are available to view on the Kilkenny County Council website .

 

The Follies Trust

The Follies Trust is interested in working with local communities to conserve small structures of architectural of historic interest. The Follies Trust aim is to encourage – throughout the island of Ireland – the conservation, preservation, restoration and protection, in their original setting, of follies, mausolea & monuments, grottoes, garden buildings and other structures of particular beauty or historic, environmental, architectural, or industrial significance. The Trust also aims to promote traditional construction and buildings skills, and to encourage knowledge and appreciation of Ireland’s artistic and cultural heritage. N77 Ballyragget Village to Ballynaslee Road Improvement Scheme

Archaeological investigations were undertaken by Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS) for the N77 Ballyragget Village to Ballynaslee Road Improvement Scheme on behalf of Kilkenny County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
