Help Kilkenny’s Hedgehogs
Are there hedgehogs living in your area? If you’d like to find out, why not take part in the Irish Hedgehog Survey this summer and help us to find out more about this shy native mammal? There are no special skills required and anyone with an interest in nature is welcome to help.
The Heritage Office of Kilkenny County Council is running a FREE Hedgehog Workshop on Sat 2nd July from 11am-1pm in Kilkenny City, in partnership with NUI Galway, for anyone who would like to take part in the Hedgehog survey. You’ll be given all the information you need for the survey, advice on making a hedgehog footprint tunnel, and tips for making your garden more hedgehog friendly. Join in and be a Citizen Scientist!
The workshop is free but places are limited, so advance booking is required. Contact heritage@kilkennycoco.ie to book your place. The Heritage Office will give a free biodiversity goodie bag to everyone who completes the workshop.
Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, 157 sightings of hedgehog were recorded in Kilkenny in 2021. This information helps to build up a detailed picture of where hedgehogs are, and how they’re doing. We’d like to gather even more information in 2022.
