What to do if you find archaeology

All archaeological excavation requires an excavation license.  However, if you inadvertently find archaeological remains please immediately contact the National Monuments section of the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltachta on http://www.ahg.gov.ie/heritage/national-monuments-service/, and complete the Monument Report Form.

Human remains, unless recent, are considered to be archaeological objects and the National Museum of Ireland  http://www.museum.ie/Home  should be contacted immediately.  In the event of discovery of human remains of an unclear date the Local Coroner and the An Garda Síochána should be notified.

Metal Detecting

The unauthorised use of metal detectors to look for archaeological objects is against the law. Please see the advice relating to metal detection devices from the National Museum of Ireland.
